Today, my husband started cleaning out his closet, and I noticed that the material in men's clothing is better than the material in women's clothing. So, I snagged this dress shirt -
It looks pink, but it is actually white with small purple pinstripes. I wish it fit me as is, but it is huge on me.
So, I made some alterations. Check back later to see what it looks like now....

Wear your clothes
I just cleaned out my closet and found 63 items that I NEVER wear!
I found 72 items that I only wear occasionally. I couldn't talk myself into getting rid of these, too, but hopefully will in the next go around. I want to pare down my wardrobe to the items that I actually wear all of the time.
The moral of this story is my style tip #1 -
Buy something only if you love it more than your favorite item that you already own.
If you just buy "staples" and "basics", you will end up with a closet full of "blah".
Style tip #2 -
Don't save your favorite outfits for special occasions. Wear them.
Buy your favorite outfits, wear them out, get rid of them. Then buy more favorite outfits. Your wardrobe will be smaller but more interesting and fun.
I did find a few items that can be re-purposed. First item -
Check back later to see what these pants will become...

Are you an escape artist?
Do you spend part of your day trying to escape from the rest of it? Your escape could be anything you choose that does not add to your life - TV, internet, food, exercise, shopping, gossip, etc. (Escaping feels different from simply relaxing.) An escape is an attempt to expand your soul that does not go far enough.
I've been an escape artist all of my life, but my husband is slowly teaching me to say regarding my problems, "What can we do about this?" rather than entering a downward spiral of introspection. This brings me to my mantra for the past year - "If you don't like your life, change it." Figure out what you are escaping from and change it. Then examine your "escape" to see if it represents something your soul needs. Go for it in a more productive way.
Start small, but think big.

Is being FASHIONABLE essential to BALANCE?
To the question above, I would say "no", BUT...I do believe what you wear reflects how you feel about your life.
In high school, my unique (and sometimes wacky) outfits expressed my desire to escape the constant academic and social pressure. During college and early career, I felt more comfortable and literally started to conform to the dress I saw around me. In my late 20's, my all black wardrobe reflected my dim outlook on the future as I felt trapped in a successful career that was suffocating my soul. My style of dress has changed with every stage of my life, and as I look back now, my clothes have always expressed my state of being.
What is your soul saying to you through your clothes?

Atlanta Street Style - Part 2
Today, I traveled to a mall a little further into town. I was not greeted by the same sea of sweatpants as I was yesterday; however, everyone still looked pretty much the same. The style level started to increase as I entered Neiman Marcus.
She said she bought them overseas - "cheap". Of course. The only place I could find this exact shoe was on Amazon.com where there are only a few sizes left. (It is called the Ash Women's Genial Fashion Sneaker in Fango.) NeimanMarcus.com carries a similar shoe in gray.
Then I ran across the first stylish caucasian that I have seen in two days.
She was also wearing great shoes - wedge Mary Janes. She said they are Christian Louboutin from a few seasons ago. I found a lot of similar looking shoes on the internet, but few are crafted like these. You have to be careful not to stray into granny territory. A more casual, summer version can be found in the following Bettye Muller espadrilles on Endless.com.
But seriously, where are the rest of the stylish white people? Next week, I will be traveling even further into the city to find some.

Atlanta Street Style
It gives me great joy to see people in the north side of Atlanta making an effort with their style on a Tuesday morning. There aren't many of them. Here are two that I found today:
I love the puffs on Shaunda's shoulders, and the shoes are fabulous.
Kenny looked happy and stylish with his red, yellow and green combo, which was slightly toned down by the cool leather jacket and sunglasses. Loved the hat with the pom pom on the top.
It seems that a lot of the people I see in north atlanta (except the two above) have given up. Their life is not that exciting, so they just want to be "comfortable". Come on, Atlanta, dress for the life you want!
